Why Donate?
When you donate your computer equipment for refurbishment to CFS-MB, you will have the following impact:
- You keep your surplus equipment out of the landfill and turn it into a valuable resource for schools, non-profit organizations, libraries and others;
- You help provide Manitobans with greater access to information technology (IT) to develop their skills;
- You help youth receive practical, hands-on IT training and valuable work experience in our workshop.

- Laptops
- Audio/Visual equipment (DVD players, MP3 players, speakers, cameras, etc.)
- Phones and smartphones
- Printers
- Televisions and monitors

Information Security
Protecting your information from unauthorized access, theft, or unintended use is very important to us. Our policy requires donors to remove all confidential information from any electronic equipment they are donating for reuse or recycling. Once we accept your donation, we will also sanitize all electronic data storage devices (i.e. hard drives, flash drives, etc.) using the CSEC ITSG-06 (3 pass) erase method. All electronic data storage devices that fail the sanitization procedure, and data storage devices that cannot be reused, will be physically altered and then destroyed to prevent data recovery. We will also remove all donor identifying information on equipment before being recycled or reused.
A Certificate of Erasure/Destruction can be provided upon request and payment of a $10.00 service fee (plus tax) per data device.
What Equipment Do We Reuse?
We assess all equipment donated for reuse to ensure it meets the following minimum standards:
Minimum Requirements for Reuse | |
---|---|
Equipment Type | Requirement |
Desktop Computers | i-Series or AMD equivalent |
Apple Computers | Manufactured 2015 or later |
Laptops | i-Series or AMD equivalent |
Monitors | 17" LCD or larger |
Printers | Laser |
Servers | Intel Xeon |
Scanners | USB |
Copiers/Fax Machines | N/A |
Keyboards & Mice | PS/2 or USB |
Network Switches | 1 GB+ |
We base these standards on what is usable in schools and other organizations.
We will only reuse computers that are in good condition (not physically damaged and/or discoloured). Equipment not in good condition will be recycled.
Tax receipts can be issued by request only if the computer is complete, fully functional and meets the following minimum specifications:
- Desktop Computers: i-Series
- Laptops: i-Series
NOTICE: In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, appointments must be made for tax receipt requests.
Refurbishment Process
If the equipment can be reused, interns and Co-op staff clean, upgrade, and test it to ensure its re-usability.
If computer equipment donated for reuse cannot be refurbished, we recycle it according to Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA) guidelines.
Please Note:
If you have more than 20 items to donate, please contact us to schedule an appointment.
For Non-Residential E-Waste, we may require a list of the items you are donating for reuse. Please contact us to discuss whether or not a list is required or send us an email at donations@c4smb.ca.
